The son of John Nicholson and Annie Maria Hatch, Texas historian James C. Hatch married Melissa Hampton on November 17, 1883. The couple settled in Port Lavaca, Texas, where they raised their eight children. Later in life, Hatch moved with his wife to San Antonio in order to live near several of their daughters who lived there.
